My cousin is going to let me borrow her car while we're in Munich. I can legally drive there using my American DL but does anyone know where I can get insurance online ahead of time? I realize it's going to be a couple hundred Euro but I only need it for 6 days. I plan to drive to Austria and around Munich.

Eh, I decided to rent a car and get insurance through them. Seems much easier.

When you reserve, ask for a BMW type 3 ...
They seldom have one and then you get *upset* ... ,
and they might give you a bigger one for the same cost !
Make sure they do NOT increase the daily rate !!!

If you work for a fairly large US company that might have international ties,
you may inquire about corporate rates !

If anything else fails, try a smaller rental company like Buchbinder or so ...
Ask your relatives in Muenchen about them.

Nice tip!

As an alternative, reserve a small basic car. When you go to pick it up, see if they have any deals on upgrades.

Enjoy the trip!

You should just eent a car. Its only about £200. So not worth it.
I don't think they will allow you to get insurance.

Buchbinder - (we used them often for our *guests*)
Go online and book there.
Go for the 30 Euro a day plan.
https://www.buchbinder.de/de/angebot...sparmobil.html
Not sure if this is unlimited mileage or not ...

I got the cheapest car and it's by far not cheap $1100 for 11 days. Adding all the insurance extras doubled it. The tax doesn't help either.

While they are a large company, they're not international.

Here's my reservation. Please let me know if you think I can get something cheaper elsewhere but still retain insurance. I just want to hand the keys over to them with as little out of pocket if something should happen to it.

I have relatives outside of Munich, so I have a free place to stay for some of my stay which is very nice. My wife and myself plan to go for atleast 14 days and possibly up to 16, which considering the cost of airfare, just isn't long enough for me. But my wife can only take so much time off unfortunately. We are at the very least getting NON STOP both ways which will cost around 2500 total for the both of us. We are going to the Netherlands, Italy and Germany for sure without a doubt. Fly into Amsterdam and start our trip.

I've been researching online but I'll admit that I'm not the brightest and it's pretty confusing on what road to take. So here's my questions for you well traveled travelers.

I would like to see the beauty of Europe which doesn't include by plane. Is there a train to take somewhere in Europe that has breath taking views that is romantic? We love the mountains. Maybe from Italy to Germany or vice versa? Also romantic places to stay and do in Italy.

From Amsterdam is it worth taking a train and stopping at a couple of cities in other countries heading back to Germany? I realize it's just 2 weeks and we may be doing quite a but of running around but we're in our early 30s so we should be fine. I just want to enjoy it so maybe 3 places is good enough, don't know.

When I searched for the fast train I was a little shocked to see for 1 person for a 15 day pass it was 2k US. Does this sound right?

Thinking this

(Fly into) Amsterdam and stay 3 days
Germany stay 4 days
Italy (multiple cities) = 5 days and fly home from here
Rest of days for traveling to these destinations.

If you have any other suggestions I'm all ears. We aren't night club type people but do enjoy drinking and playing the typical bar games.
Take a plane or train to your target destination. Line up some rural areas and rent a car. Spend a few days in the country. Avis, Hertz, Budget and other international companies that are well known in the US are all available in major national cities in Europe.

Amsterdam is not worth 3 days. Munich is OK. The mountains in Austria (The Tyrol) are just a short train-ride away. In Italy, travel to Tuscany or Umbria. The SE Adriiatic coast in and below the Abruzzo region is even better in many ways, cheaper and more friendly. Sign language works and many families in the South have relatives in the US. Just stay out of Pescara.
