I'm surprised and saddened to hear this, though I suppose it doesn't matter much to me personally, one way or the other. I always thought the right to relocate and work among the countries covered by the Schengen treaty was a great thing for the continent.

Necessary loopholes have been built in. As everywhere when it comes to immigration and "needs".
Seems to me Switzerland receive net benefits from the trade agreements with the EU. These free trade agreements hurt nations with high standards of living with a large unskilled labor force. Switzerland seems not to fit in that category and labor force is made up mainly skilled workers. Would be interesting to see the effect on the Swiss economy if they pulled out of the EU treaty altogether just to see if the EU treaty makes a big difference economy wise.
Seems Switzerland is full of xenophobic people. Immigration isn't always bad especially in the case of bringing in people that want to work or have a lot of skills.
The Swiss do not seem to have been harmed by immigration - immigrant employment is high, and unemployment in general is low, no "job-stealing" here. And in cities where the number of immigrants are highest, the vote for exclusion was lowest...in the rural areas where there are few immigrants it was high. The Swiss are not in the E.U., if they want to back farther away...so be it.
Perhaps Switzerland can work something out with the U.K. after it exits the E.U.
The Swiss aren't an EU Member, they have never joined the EU and there immigration policy is for the Swiss to decide and not the EU.
