From what I understand most Europeans do not have anything against people of other races yet at the same time expect immigrants to do as the Romans/Parisians/Berliners/Krakowites etc do ... that is assimilate into their new country, learn to speak the language, respect the mores of the host population, and such.

I can sort of understand why many British people and other Europeans may feel that having a significant portion of their population being foreign might endanger the harmony of their society. For Americans and Canadians such a state is so natural to our being because it's always been that way and we are so rootless and libertarian in our outlook but to someone from Europe where in many cases families have known their place in the world for hundreds of years this probably seems very threatening to many.

Do you think that there is a sense that Europe is being "Americanized" by making it multicultural?

Hmmm... Not really. US is often cited as an example of which benefits can immigration bring in the long-terms or of how immigration should be handled (although 90% of people, me included, largely ignore how truly work immigration policy in US).
On the other hand, most Europeans would like to see their immigrants "Europeanized" in the same way we now have Italian/German/French/Swedish etc-AMERICAN.
