if they're 'serious' I wouldn't be surprised if it's because they read alot. Maybe even more than Americans or other nationalities!!!??? I'd bet 1000 rubles that janitors know Dostoyevsky's works by heart and can teach a class on him..here I think only people with 2 PhDs reads the fellow!!..;-)...
I don't think that everything is so serious in Russia. Russians generally have good sense of humor and, which is important, they can laugh at themselves.

Agreed. Everything to its time. At bottom we're all ordinary Joe's and Ivan's running around in the world. If I could sit down with any Russian ( hehe that's 'serious') we can solve all problems in 1 hour and celebrate with a trip to St Petersburg..;-)...

You don't know anything about celebrating. One properly celebrates with vodka.
Wow. I have a graph of what Russian weather can do to somebody who really wasn't invited into the country.
Napoleon went on to Moscow with about 422,000 men in 1812. Coming out, his army disintegrated to about 26,000 at Minsk. There the soldiers were dealing with a nice temp of -24C. A bit on to Molodezno the temp dropped even further to -30C. When they got to the Niemen river Napoleon's army was at 10,000. Those soldiers of his suffered much.
Yeah, if it could only manage to get decent leadership that has a sincere interest in improving the standard of living and pursuing broad-based economic development. Hard to do, when you have oligarchs controlling key resources.
Inviting Canadians in to run the place could work.
But Ruth I can't drink vodka! It makes me sing the Volga Boatmen song off key.. But if Ihave to I'll sling one or two down in the interest of 'fraternal' relations ..;-)...
