Is Spain / Portugal prone to getting the hottest temperatures of the year in early fall and even October like California?
No, I wouldn't say that, but some coastal areas may have their hottest temperature of the year in late September/early October, October is also as hot as June these last couple of years.
Along the Atlantic in the winter it is often either rainy and mild, or sunny and cool. Last week we had a heat wave, but that is gradually fading now, and by the end of the week they forecast basically winter temps for Portugal, with highs of 16° and lows of 9° or so. Most parts of Spain are colder than Portugal in the winter, after all Spain is a very mountainous country.
Paris this weekend had an acceptable 15°C temperature and the weather was sunny. Not too bad for theis time of the year, but I fear the incoming month of November...
