I've posted here a few times about relocating to Switzerland, Germany, or another nearby country. A conversation with a few coworkers has turned into a rather "outside-the-box" solution.
I'm going to Europe in January, and will be going through Budapest. I was talking about my trip with two of the guys I work with, and telling them how inexpensive, yet fantastic of a City Budapest is. After a bit of googling, the idea came: "We should just all go in on a flat in Budapest and rotate in every few months."
With our American passports, we can stay for three out of every six months, and there would be four of us paying to rent an apartment there. Without getting into much detail, we are all self employed, and have a pretty high level of flexibility with where we can work from. Whatever we can't do from abroad, the others of us can take care of here in Hawaii. There are definitely a lot of details to work out, but we would set up a sort of rotating schedule, spending three months or so, in Budapest and the rest of the time here in Hawaii. We all work together, but as I mentioned earlier, could really work from anywhere.
So, I will be in Budapest in January, and two of my friends will fly over and join me for a bit of flat hunting. We've got a budget of $500USD per month (125,000 HUF), and would be looking for a two bedroom place.
So my questions:
Can anyone point me towards some good websites to line up some places to check out? I've searched quite a bit, but it seems like the websites I'm looking at are not what the locals would be looking at. In the USA, craigslist is the main source for something like this. Is there a similar type of site in Hungary?
I've been to Budapest three times and stayed around Nyugati Station all three times. As far as living goes, which district offers the best "bang for your buck?" I've got an okay idea of the city from my previous visits, but I've never looked into living there for an extended period of time before.
Does our budget seem adequate?
Any other information we could gather before arriving is welcomed. We're trying to streamline the process, but we don't want to just settle on the first place we see without knowing the extent of our options. We're flexible with how long we will stay for this trip, and if we end up getting a place, one of us may stay for a few months.
You realize, though, that a train ride from Budapest to Zürich takes 11 hours? Airfare from/to Zürich doesn't seem to be that cheap either. Frankly, it seems like a horrible idea to move to Budapest in order to be closer to your girlfriend, who lives in Switzerland.

This is not the only reason for it. We live in Hawaii, a relatively homogeneous place that is very separated from the rest of the world, but a lot of our work can be done from anywhere. We would establish a "base" in Budapest to spend part of the year there, and part of the year in Hawaii. With the low cost of rent and living in Hungary, and the fact that we can work "in in the USA" remotely, it seems like a feasible way to have a part time residence in a polar opposite place.

Hungary is extremely homogenous. Secondly, the transport from Budapest is not that great and will take a long time to travel. I suggest looking in Germany instead.
