Family went to Greece, and next week they will be in Turkey (Istanbul).
Today they received message from their credit card banks, that they will not honor any credit card charges in Istanbul. The US gov issued warning for US tourists.
How safe is in Istanbul for (US) tourists? I can't find anything on Internet.
There's a partly travel warning for Turkey from Dutch travel agencies. This is mostly for the south east and the border regions with Syria and Irak, but there has been an attack from two man on the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul.
Sorry this is in Dutch, but I'm sure you can translate
Istanbul in general is safe if you stay in the more touristy areas. I wouldn't venture out to the more lower-class areas (there's no reason to go there anyway), but the "downtown" area around Sultanahmet, Beyoglu etc. is fine. Just look out for pickpockets and people who try to scam you, they're everywhere. I just went to Istanbul a few months back and it was an amazing experience.

Most people are fellow travelers and very helpful.
I never leave home without them.
As we speak, there are thousands of Western tourists in Turkey and all of them will likely return safe at home. But Muslims are imprevisible and I think even Turks have become more hostile to Europeans in last years. I for one, would avoid, as a trip under the mark of fear is not so much relaxing.
