i'm a graduate student and might do an exchange program in grenoble for a semester. i've been to paris twice, but haven't spent significant time outside of paris when in france.

how is grenoble for a student? nightlife? outdoor activities?

I know friends living there, you should fine what you want. It's one of the most polluted city in the country and crime is rising but Paris is worse on these metrics so if you survived there you'll be fine in Grenoble but don't expect it to be nowhere near Paris for entertainment, no French city can compete with Paris for that.

This is a very student-oriented city, so I believe night life should be fine. Outdoor activities are great considering the location of the city (between the mountains).

I like it because it's big but still very walkable, it's easy to reach natural areas nearby if that's your thing. It is pretty wealthy also.

Thank you for the information. I definitely don't expect it to be on the level of Paris, but it seems like a nice city in a beautiful setting in the mountains... Hopefully I get funding for the exchange program.

Well, it's much smaller than Paris, but it's also much more accessible and simple to live in, I don't know. I mean for a city of that size in France, there is much worse.

Marseille is much worse, however Bordeaux is really nice. Lille is a bit grey but it has the best nightlife after Paris.

Lived in Cannes and went to Grenoble several time.
Great city, a lots to do( large student population), location, location location...In the footsteps of the mountains, easy access to the coast and other major cities. You will love it.

Marseille is bigger though. I like it but it might not be for everyone. I don't really know Bordeaux, but I always felt it was far from everything.
