I live in a valley in the western Alps, in Val Susa. The lower part of the Valley is quite urbanized, but the parts on the mountains are still mainly covered by woods.

Even if I'm quite lazy, and so I rarely walk in the woods, I've seen quite a lot of wild animals (usually because they tried to cross my road). Now I remember some deer, roe deer (really similar to normal deer, but smaller), boars, badgers, foxes... these are the larger ones, about smaller animal is easy to see the "faine" (wikipedia calls them "beech martens"), which are famous for killing our chickens, hares, squirrels and "ghiri" (--> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edible_dormouse ), hedgehog...

About flying animals, there are several birds (the weirdest I've seen are probably the woodpeckers), and we often see also predator birds that look like little eagles (I don't know exactly which specie are they, but so that there are only 2 eagle in the whole valley I doubt that they are real eagles. They are more likely "poiane" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_buzzard ). Also, I have often seen grey herons, that often fly from one lake to the other of the Valley.

Then I've seen lots of reptiles (like green lizards, or snakes like vipers) an amphibians (such as frogs and salamanders).

Then above 2000 m is also really easy to see marmots. My dad also saw chamois, and in the highest part of the valley there are some alpine ibex too (but they are much more difficult to see).

I've never seen them, but lately some wolves have be seen in my valley. This is considered as an important news because the number of wolves was incredibly low in the past 50 years.

In my valley there are also three regional parks, in which you can see even more animals.

Are there brown bears? If so, I guess Finland and most of Scandinavia would be such a dangerous place to sleep in sleeping bags within those landscapes.

My bad, I thought I was in the world forum at the time, but then again it's in my innate nature to sometimes ignore direction either way deal with it.

The brown bears are concentrated in the Central-Eastern part of the country. Bears are very shy animals with an excellent sense of smell, so they will notice you before you notice them. Attacks by bears are very rare, the last time one killed a man was in 1998. You have absolutely nothing to fear in our woods.

Oh, crap. Well, good in fact for our image. But I miss the old Tallinn, now it's almost as expensive as Helsinki and almost Nordic. I miss the days when you could do anything there if only you had the money. Pirate CD's, shabby taxis, clip joints with strippers, cheap awful food, Soviet memorabilia, drinking underaged, and trolleybuses. Those were the days, hehe.

Regret a bit that we never went to bang those sleazy Russian prostitutes. Would probably been a blast for a 17-yo boy, and an experience to remember.
