There are stereotypes that French and spanish drinks wine and German drinks beer during lunch?

How much of that is true? What happens during workdays then? Does drinking alcoholic beverages allow during work?

It's fine if it's "one" glass of wine at restaurant for lunch. An adult isn't wasted with one glass of red wine.

Drink alcohol in your office is totally forbidden.

Depends on the area and company culture but it you go to a restaurant nobody will think anything if you order a beer. Beer is more prevalent in Bavaria, here in the Pfalz a wine spritzer would be pretty normal. Radler (beer mixed with Sprite like soda 2.5%) is popular. No one gets drunk though that is looked down on. Now when we have our annual IT meeting or go out to dinner we drink a lot on the company tab.

Wouldn't it be ok to drink alcohol on your lunch hour (provided you don't get drunk) in any western country?

Unless it's Christmas Eve, n'est-ce pas?

My observations:

In France, in certain industries and among younger people, lunch breaks are becoming much shorter and alcohol is increasingly excluded. Work is more competitive and longer hours and increased family expectations (especially for men) mean that long lazy wine soaked lunches have gone the way of the fax machine. Of course, among 'traditional' types, old ways often will still persist.

In creative type companies in London, beer and wine is commonly available directly in the office. Generally it's not cracked open until later in the day and is sometimes included in, for example, working sessions with clients.

When I was working in Germany many years ago, beer was very common at lunch - even among factory workers and others working with dangerous equipment. Not sure if this has changed as it was about 15 years ago.

I don't know about the Spanish working culture.

So if you go for lunch with your co-worker in a restaurant and order 1 glass of wine or a beer, it should be ok? Does it affect your ability to work afterward?

No, it doesn't affect my ability to work afterward. Does it affect yours?

Often, when we go out to lunch we will order small margaritas... so what? No one is drunk or acting crazy.
It's totally OK at my workplace, and a few others I worked before.

BTW: no one is talking about "long, lazy, alcohol soaked lunches"

The thing is we may think we are fine but it may affect our cognitive ability and we may not perform as well. Is any study out there for this?
