What would be small cities in Europe that plays a big role economically

Define small?

Perhaps Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt for Germany. (VW and Audi). Sindelfingen as well perhaps than with Mercedes.

Totally Agree there are lots of tax havens and small principalities in Europe that play a significant economic role, although the EU is supposedly going to clampdown, but then again it's been saying that for years now.

Ports usually also play a significant economic role, for instance Rotterdam is one of the main shipping gateways in to Europe.

Depends where we put the cursor...1.2 million inhabitants isn't London or Paris-like but still, it's big for euro standards...
