OP, have you thought about the tax implications? Your Social Security and other retirement income could get double-taxed (by the US and Denmark), and Denmark's tax rate would be astronomical compared to the US. Look before you leap, do your homework.

Oops, old thread. Oh well.

Yeah, it's an old thread, but I'm responding to your comment. I think you may be wrong about that. Denmark and the US have tax agreements to prevent double taxation in some cases.

Well, that may be, but it's something anyone who wants to retire abroad should look into. I had relatives who moved to Canada to retire, and they ended up paying tax to both countries.

How does that work? What would you be taxed on, if you aren't earning an income anymore?

Denmark can't possibly tax someone just for residing there as a retired person, can they?

You mentioned that that is how it worked for an American couple retired in Canada. How does Canada tax them? I can sales taxes, real estate taxes, but that would be consistent anywhere you buy things, have a house, etc.

Is there some OTHER tax that taxes foreign retirees as well?

(Yeah, this is an old thread, but it's still an interesting topic. I love Denmark - I probably won't retire there, but I'd still like to know about it anyways).
