For an extended stay in France I would like to prepare by learning the language.
What I would like to find is a site where I can read and listen to French being spoken. Being a beginner I'll need to start with lesson #1.
Are there any sites to give me a good grasp of French?
All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You can get lessons at the library on tape.

Thanks missy, good suggestion for the library. The only problem is the library loans for 6 weeks (including extension). I'll be needing the lessons for quite a long time and the overdue fines would pile up way too much.

You might want to call your local Alliance Francaise, and see what they recommend in terms of self-help.
Through the Denver Alliance Francaise, I bought a French lesson CD. It came with a workbook, and I just sort of followed along. I would slip in the CD any time I felt like it, and respond to the prompts. (My French is still wretched, but that's my fault.)

Hi Visvaldis,

I found a program "Before you know it" (Learn Spanish, French, Italian, German and 60 other languages with BYKI software.), where I was able to download Georgian for free. I'm sure they offer French, too.

Bon chance!

I've heard Rosetta Stone is good, but very expensive. One of the best is Michel Thomas's CD sets, and Pimsleur is good for beginners also.
