Ah, Slovakia. I've lived there. So many friends, so many crazy adventures and so many pretty girls. I dated like crazy there. I literally broke down and started crying when I was leaving Bratislava. I wish I saw more of the country, I haven't been much around. So I've been to some of these but not all. I've decided that all those little known cities and towns deserve to be better-known. You'd be surprised how many interesting places there are in not just Slovakia but Central Europe as a whole.
IMHO there's way too many to list , but here are some examples :
1. Kezmarok
A city that is extremely rich in terms of historical sightseeing and in my experience rather ignored by foreign ( especially ) Western tourists .
2. Banská Bystrica
Another city that has plenty to see in terms of spectacular historical buildings and also happens to be close to worthwhile nature oriented tourist excursions .
3. Fil'akovo
I'm naturally a bit biased in recommending the place , what with owning a cottage on its outskirts , but it really is a great place to visit if you want to see the " real " Slovakia outside of big cities/towns .
It also happens to be a good representation of the predominantly Hungarian majority settlements which abound in the Southern half of the country , making it worthwhile to check out from that standpoint as well .
