Nice I'm assuming your military and you've been assigned to the base in Vicenza? It's only about 30-45 minutes from Venice and the town.....bellissimo. Crime is really low there, mostly because the military base is actually an Italian base so there are Italian military personel there with you. This sort of lessens the feeling of "invasion" on their society which, in turn, makes it better for you. Lucky you!
Be aware, There is an ugly truth people station here won't tell you. If you live off post you better have good renters insurance and jewlery insurance. This is due to the high incidents of B&E. Taking an informal poll of people who live here have indicated they have been victicm of some sort of burgulary. i.e. car, home etc. What is really sad is if you become a victim the response time for local law enforcement is 3 hrs+ if you live outside the Vicenza city limits there's a coordination effort that may take longer. Sometime the local law enforcement outside of Vicenza won't deal with you because you are an american and pass it back to the on base police. However, the base police cannot respond to a call unless there's a carabieri accompany them. So if you happen to be station in Italy here's some hints for you: 1. Make sure to up your jewelry insurance and take pictures and document it i.e. receipts, pictures of you wearing it. This is to establish ownership. 2. If you rent in the local economy make sure the house has windows/ door bars, alarm systems and it won't hurt to have dogs. 3. Don't leave any valuables visible. Burglars are big into snatch an grab. 3. Make sure auto insurance is up todate. 4. Learn the language. We have been force to learn the language because Italians for most part don't like to speak english eventhough they understand it. In addition, you have to deal with law enforcement if the translator is not available. Why am I telling you this....because foks here won't tell until it happens to you. Hope this will help you make an informed decision. Other than that Italy is a beautiful place.

They force you to learn the language! The cheek! You, an American citizen, no less! And what about those evil Europeans who refuse to speak your language even though they can, because you can read their minds and you know they can!
