I think France is a sorely misrepresented country in the US. When most Americans think of France, they think of Paris -- and maybe Normandy.
The truth is that France is really the crossroads of Western Europe, and the thing I love about it the most is how incredibly diverse every region is -- in terms of landscape, climate, culture, architecture, everything. Much moreso than Italy, in my opinion!
Paris, Brittany, Alsace, Basque Country, Provence, the Alps, Auvergne... each one is like its own country. France has a little bit of Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and even the British Isles all within its borders. No other European country can say the same.
The evidence is in the French language itself, which is a blend of Romance, Celtic, and Germanic languages.
That said, France and Italy are both incredibly beautiful and fascinating countries. But I have to give the edge to France.
I've never been to Italy, but have traveled in France several times. Beautiful country with much to see and experience. If I visited Italy I would probably say the same about Italy. Living around Mount Blanc may solve the problem because Italy is only a few miles away.
