I'm a travelholic from Sydney and I'd like to base myself in a city in Eastern Europe for some time. What would you say is the friendliest city in the region, and why?
Poznań! Then again, having lived there for a while, I'm biased too
It's a place that has the big city feel without the big city hassle, a place where you can enjoy both the architecture and nightlife, a place that's clean and safe, with an airport in the city and only ~90 minutes away by car from Berlin. Finally, an academic center (home to roughly 140,000 college students) and a place with amazing public transportation.
If you have any more specific questions, do ask them!

In what way are the ppl in Prague friendlier than in other places? And which places do you draw on for comparison?
Yac -
I have been to Opole and Warsaw (briefly) in Poland... how would you say Poznan compares to either of those? And have you ever been to Gdansk? I've heard good things about it.
Hard to say, what means friendly?
I like Prague, Budapest, Riga, Tallinn. Tallinn has a very low crime and I felt safe walking around alone at night. Prague has lots of bars, restaurants and good beer. Budapest is one of my favourite city.
I like Kiev very well, but speak Russian nearly fluently, if you don't it may not be so great for you. It's a nice town though, the main drag closes down during the summer on weekends to become a big pedestrian mall.
I haven't visited Opole, and my last trip to Gdańsk was almost 10 years ago, with this EU money that's been pouring into the country it has changed so much in the last few years that I honestly couldn't say.
I have some family in Warsaw and try to visit every couple of years. What I like about it ...well, to be honest, apart from numerous monuments and parks, not much. It's congested, traffic is horrible, the central station and it's surroundings reek of urine (I really was shocked about how bad it was last time I was there). But, at the same time, despite high cost of living, if you want to earn some serious $, that's the place to be. Poznań is a bit more laid back, though it's not lazy - while unemployment in Poland has been around 9-10%, in Poznań it's below 1%.
I suggest you visit skyscrapercity.com - there are several photo threads with polish cities there (or any Eastern European city you might be interested in, in fact), and a picture is worth a 1000 words

Plovdiv and Prague. People are nice and they're comfortable places full of things to do.
