Kinda goes back to the Sugar Addiction thread that is on the Diet and Weight loss forum. Although, I am not surprised by this news, really.

I like how they have no study, information or anything to back this information up.

Somebody left this comment on the article

"numbers are incorrect. See Sugar association in washington or Canadian sugar institute in Toronto. Also International Sugar association in London England........Note there is a big difference between consumption and disappearance"

Could also be one part of country making the numbers worse and making it look like everyone consumes that much. Probably the South skewed the numbers high with so many cramming donuts.

I do not wonder. Everything has a sugar in it, even food that is not supposed to be sweet. Sometimes I think that they try to "cover up" the big amount of salt they added to the food.

According to diet surveys conducted by the USDA, the average American consumes 20 teaspoons of added sugar each day.

The following is from Coping With Anxiety by Edmund Bourne, PH.D., and Lorna Garano. It was published in 2003.

Sugar Doesn't Sweeten the Deal

Do you believe in reincarnation? If you do, we can tell you one thing for sure about your past lives: unless you were born into vast wealth, you would not have had the opportunity to consume much sugar. Certainly, you wouldn't have devoured the 120 pounds of it per year that the average American consumes.

The rising intake of sugar began in the twentieth century and has reached an unprecedented height in present-day America. One or two desserts and sugar-laden snacks have become regular features of our daily diet. In addition, sugar is found in everything from salad dressings to processed meat to cereal and in many beverages.

The Sugar Roller Coaster

Because our bodies are not equipped to rapidly process large doses of sugar, a chronic imbalance in sugar metabolism often results. For some, this means high levels of blood sugar, or diabetes, the prevalence of which has skyrocketed in our time. For many more, though, the problem is the exact opposite: periodic dips in blood sugar that trigger a condition called hypoglycemia.
pg 90

Simply put our bodies are not evolutionary designed to consume much sugar.

Its the reason America and some other western cultures are dealing with an epidemic of obesity and diabetes and other related health issues.

I have no doubt that the majority of Americans are sugar addicts but sometimes these "studies" are annoying. I don't remember being surveyed.
