I'd say don't buy the stuff in grocery stores that is made with high fructose corn syrup. It's bad for you. From what I've been told, the powder version is better. The main purpose behind it is electrolyte replacement, plus it also has some carbs. Here is a very good article about electrolyte basics:
Electrolyte Replacement, Explained | Running Times Magazine (http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=18090 - broken link)
I can't speak to the weightlifting but as a runner I've always been told that gatorade is not needed unless you're running very long, say over 2-3 hours. Even for a 3 hour training run I usually don't use anything but water, because this trains the body to use fat as fuel, rather than glycogen (which is what carbs provide). In a race (marathon) I drink gatorade and take a gel to get carbs, since I'm trying to maximize my performance. Anyway, read the article, I think you'll find it very helpful and easy to understand.
Gatorade is essentially useless. It's 150 of wasted calories. Gookinaid is BY FAR the superior drink for recovery.
And the prior poster is correct: unless you're hiking long distances or running 12+ miles, you don't need an electrolyte replacement drink unless it's very hot outside.
Gatorade is the same thing as Kool aid. Kool aid is just sugar water with artificial flavor. Electroites is just a fancy name for sugar and the process our body does with the sugar we digest.
Stick with good ol' water.
The pro athletes drinking it on the sideline is pretty much "free" press since Gatorade invests a crap ton of money into pretty much every major sport. You scratch my back I scratch yours type of thing.

BUT, when on a really intense workout, like a 3 hour 20mph ride, gatorade is easier for me to drink than water or water with Nuun tablets. I think the sweetness, even in the low cal version, keeps me drinking after I have lost my taste for other beverages. On the long/intense rides it is water or water with Nuun tablet in 1st bottle and Gatorade in 2nd bottle.

No it's not. HFCS is no better or worse for you than regular cane sugar.
