Why do you say you can't believe this is even a question?

Uncrowded. Forget waiting for equipment!! How about avoiding bodies to just find a place to lift a weight, and not be bumped up to someone else (especially not a sweaty, stinky, dripping body) or not step on someone's hand doing push ups... Or the fact that the temperature & humidity is WAYYY higher in an overcrowded gym.... Or finding a clean towel....

Why don't you tell us about people who like crowded gyms OP? You said you've heard both sides....please enlighten us.

Very well, I, just like you and everyone who has replied so far prefer an uncrowded gym and I thought having that preference would be a no brainier too as another poster said but apparently it is not. This is what I have heard from several people; some people will mention their preference of a crowded gym because of the group classes they like to take, they say that without a big crowd those classes are not fun, others like to go when it is crowded because they go in a group and train together which supports what Boxus said about them going there for their social fix. But the most common reason that I have heard for people preferring the gym when it is crowded is the energy in the atmosphere, they say that they like it when it is crowded because it keeps them focus and motivated because they draw energy from the crowd. That does not work for me, the more crowded the gym is the less my desire to train is , I just feel like going home. Those are the reasons that I have been given to go to the gym when it is crowded so if other people have more reasons bring them on I would like to hear them.

I've heard this as well. Definitely not for me, but I certainly understand it.

This fits me exactly. In fact, I paid 50/month all last year for a gym membership and the after-work rush was TERRIBLE and that was the only time I could go. It was literally crowded wall-to-wall which made it MISERABLE so I was rarely able to muster the motivation to go more than a couple days per week. Now I'm paying less for a gym and there's always room to spread out and do my thing. In 2 months I've seen significantly more progress than in all of last year, all thanks to the lack of crowding!!

I no longer lift weights but box and train most of the time at home now.

It depended on the gym. When I did lift, I've gone to semi-packed , well equipped hardcore lifting gyms and people are working, focused and considerate. You feed off each others energy and people are encouraging.

On occasion, I've gone to packed commercial gyms when on the road and it was pure chaos. Inconsiderate morons not wiping their equipment off, gabbing etc.

The boxing gym, when I manage to go can be crowded, but everyone is busy jumping rope, shadowboxing, stretching, etc. Even if there is a wait for a bag, you are doing something, so I don't mind. Again, the sound of the bags, yelling and ropes is pure energy.

I prefer a smelly small old school boxing style gym. Never overcrowded but wreaked of determination and the overworked.
I don't utilize the gym to read magazines, drink lattes, or compare neat heart monitors.

I prefer to work out with low a patron count.

Empty gym is the best, but not usual to find.

I prefer it when the gym is not crowded. I like it when the equipment that I want to use is available and it's easy to find enough space to do particular exercises.
