Just body weight exercises can get you some muscle if you are male. Pushups of all kinds, burpees, pullups - Insanity-type exercises. Look on Youtube for all kinds of home workouts with and without small weights. Search for home workout, high intensity interval training, and plyometrics.
I'd suggest skipping the idea of buying a machine. Instead, invest in more dumbbells, over a range of weights including some that are substantially heavier than what you have now. You'll need to experiment and find the weight for each exercise that you can lift only a few times. Then expect to purchase still heavier weights later on as your strength increases. Even doing this you'll most likely pay a lot less than you would for one machine, and you'll get better workouts with free weights.
Besides additional free weights, other equipment you might consider would be a chinning bar, dipping bars, and a bench.
I heard about px 90 and how intense it is. What tools do you need to succeed in px 90?
You would probably want to purchase some heavier dumbbells (at least a pair of 30 and 40 lbs most likely) and some sort of pull up bar (the type that fits on your door frame) but that is really all that you would need to do p90x. I did 6 months of it and loved it. Great alternative to the gym.
I spent about $1500 on rubber floor mats, a pull-up bar, an olympic barbell and some bumper plates earlier this year. It's the best money I've ever spent on my health/fitness by a mile.
I do go to a gym that is provided by my job, only because it is free and uncrowded, But I have never belonged to a gym, and always loved to exercise outside in the park. Mostly just running, but also do a lot of other stuff. Check out some of the ghetto workout videos. I have been doing this sort of thing for years. I just never knew that it was 'ghetto.'
Me too. Especially because they are filthy. After you're 23 years old, no one really cares anymore if you're ripped or not. Just run outside, do some pushups/situps, and some pullups at home and you're good. Calisthenics using your own body weight is also good enough for most people not training to get into the NFL.
I also HATE HATE HATE the stupid contracts gyms make you sign up for that last a year or longer and that are almost impossible to get out of without running through ridiculous hoops to cancel.
