By the time you invest in weights, equipment, DVD routines, etc. you will have paid for multiple years of membership at a gym but are now burdened with the task of storage and maintenance. There are many $10 - $20 per month gyms out there. I go to a $12/month gym and know several other people who go to $10/month gyms. I found one that was close to work so just go on the way home.

I'm thinking the one closest to me would be at least $50 a month. There are other pared down options, such as going to use the facilities at our parks/rec dept.
I found in the past when I belonged to a gym the additional time aspect of getting there ended up being a deterrent to me wanting to go. At this point I'm not looking to spend hundreds of dollars.
Get yourself a good treadmill from a shop that sells used equipment and start on it. If you can find one with the handles that you move your arms with while walking get that one.
Since you do not like running outside right now, get a jump rope. But I say toughen up and go outside.
There are a thousand things you can do with your body weight, do some searching around for some things; basics are push ups, pull ups, planks, body weight squats, and many other things; these will easily assist in establishing a base level of fitness.
Well right now it is 1 degree outside and not everyone in our neighborhood has their sidewalks clear. So I'm looking for options for these sorts of days.

While you are at it, work on your flexibility.
This ^^^..Maybe at a later date you may consider a heavy bag. This will give you a full body workout and the options are unlimited.
P90X is intense. You can probably find free videos on the Internet. Good sources there if you have a large PC screen or able to connect a computer to a television. If you live in a city with a well organized library you should be able to borrow workout videos.
Have a staff member who only works out at home-pushups, situps, planking, rope jumping. Plus some of those exercise you see for incarcerated folk to do in their cells. I think it is a good workout as well.
Then there is Craigslist or thrift stores and their cheap copies of Billy Blanks tapes,etc.etc.
