Doesn't matter. You have to find out what works for you. I don't eat anything before I work out since I feel sluggish. My wife get's nauseous if she doesn't eat anything before. You might need 1 hour to feel normal or you might need 20 minutes.
When I'm lifting in the morning I usually just drink a protein shake and I'm good to go by the time I'm done driving over to the gym.
For running on short days, usually just drink some coffee and an electrolyte drink. Wait about 45 minutes for the coffee to kick in and head out the door.
When I'm doing my long runs on the weekend I need to eat something beforehand. So either a small bowl of oatmeal or a Cliff Bar, wash it down with coffee and wait an hour. Most important thing is to make sure you eat after your workout. Know a few people that are in such a rush to workout and get ready for work that they neglect eating in the morning.
I always have a protein shake or a mini-meal before a workout. A mini-meal to me, is 1/2 my usual serving of oats, or a yogurt, a piece of fruit. If it's the protein shake, then I can do it right before the workout, but if it's the mini-meal, I prefer to eat it about an hour in advance. I really don't like to eat a full meal less than 2 hours pre-work out, as it causes digestive upset. Really don't want to be burping, or worse while working out.
As schmedes2 & skel1977 said, you need to figure out what works best for YOU.
I usually eat a couple of handfuls of peanuts or if im really hungry, a can of albacore tuna. Gives me energy and allows me to continue working out. But as a general rule, for me, I cant eat ANYTHING filling for hours and hours and hours before working out. That bloated feeling really has a way of killing the workout.
