What are some methods of planning for an athletic event to ensure that you don't get caught in the middle of the event, finding that you suddenly have to "excuse yourself" and there is no available means of doing so?
Thanks for any info.
What works for me is the night before, i stop eating/drinking around 7-8pm. I wake up about 3 hours before and eat/drink immediately. Then i hang out by the urinals and go as much as i can before the race starts.
You know this from personal experience? I know people who run NYC and Marine Corps, and none have heard a strict two hour rule where they close the corrals.
I haven't run either of those but my husband has, and they ask everyone to be there two hours in advance and close corrals about an hour in advance.
As far as having to excuse yourself during an event, maybe try to retrain yourself to go earlier or later in the day? In my first triathlon I had to excuse myself coming out of T1. Laid the bike down and RAN to the nearest porta-john. I still catch a little flak about that. But, if you gotta go, you gotta go.
Apparently, nobody here is a cyclist. I run but am not a hard core runner - never came close to marathon distance. But I do ride a lot and we need to empty the ol' bowels before a race or hard ride too. 2 things:
1) People who race or even train regularly are on a schedule and have good control and knowledge about their bodies. They can time a BM pretty well. For example, I go in the am (9ish) and sometimes another in the late afternoon depending on what I ate and how much I drank that day. If i go out for an early am training ride I can usually have a BM beforehand so although I have a regular daily BM schedule I can also control it pretty OK. The more familiar you get with your body and your diet, the better you will be at it.
2) Secret weapon: coffee
