Welcome - What Real Women Look Like

You can't go by just height and weight, but also muscle tone, build, etc. 100 women who are the same height and weight will all wear different sizes and look different. Yet if I put 5'4 and 140 pounds on a dating profile, 80% of the guys would assume I'm overweight.

This is why women lie about their weight.

You look great, btw.

I know that actresses lie like hell about their dress sizes. There's no way some of them are a size 0, because, while they are surely not fat, they have way too much hip to fit into a zero. I know.. I have been VERY thin... chest bones protruding sort of thin, and I wasn't wearing a zero... I could barely fit into a 2 and this was in the 80s before vanity sizing went crazy. LOL.

I think the focus should be on the "eye test" instead of a specific height to weight target. If a person works out and eats healthily, their size and shape will differ (perhaps significantly) from someone using the exact same regimen.

Before kids, I had a 29' waist. Since kids, I can't even imagine what I'd look like with a 29" waist, but I'd be getting off my lazy butt if it was 37"!!

Yup. I agree. Do you look good in your clothes? Do you have to struggle to find clothes that are large enough to fit you? Do you eat healthy foods most of the time? (we all need to indulge in a treat here and there) Do you feel good? Are you able (barring no other health concerns) to do the things you like to do with relative ease?

Yay. You're doing okay.

Before kids I had a 24" waist. Mine is wider now, but I'm 46, so hey. If I was at 37.5 I'd assume I must be pregnant, because that size is far too large for my body type.

But, that is me. If a woman with a different hip-waist ratio was answering these questions, she'd have different answers.

Help me understand this. I realize this is several pounds heavier than women used to be. It's debatable about whether 140 pounds really has health implications for a 5'4" woman. What I can't understand is where is the crisis? The average means that there are sufficient women way under this to counter balance those way over. So---is there really a crisis?

At a recent visit to Costco, I saw so many obese people that I was buying into the obesity crisis. But after reading the article and returning from the gym which has a predominance of extremely thin (and some muscular) people, I'm confused as to what is really the case.
I assure you that is NOT the average here in the USA. No way.

One time I was at Cheddar's and everyone there was morbidly obese except the servers who looked anorexic. It is really too bad, but I'm 140lbs at 5'2". I know it's the medication, but still. People do take weight way out of proportion. :/

Well, that's a clue right there. The servers are running around like crazy....activity helps keep you at a healthy weight.

Or they're not making enough money.

In case it was missed, I was also critical of men that looked like baby blimps. Just have little patience with men or women that have so little self respect and discipline that they allow themselves to become badly overweight, and then make up excuses about it.
