I don't smoke and never have. However, I know several smokers that won't consider stopping because they fear gaining weight. My mother had a heart attack and swore that she would stop smoking while in the hospital. She was demanding a cigarette before they wheeled her to the car waiting outside. I can't imagine her ever stopping for ANY reason. I also knew a woman that had severe emphysema using an oxygen tank. She lit up whenever her nurse wasn't around. I can't imagine having an addiction that consumed every waking moment and I try not to be judgmental of others that are fighting that kind of battle. It certainly can't be easy.
If you put on a lot weight after you quit smoking would you be willing to start smoking again to lose weight??
According to me I don't start smoking for loosing weight because that's not good for your health. And if you want to lose weight, then try various exercises, you can go gym, Tyr supplements if necessary. Work to lose weight but don't start smoking again.
As a compulsive person I smoked heavily (3 packs a day) for many years. In the 21 years since I quit I have gone from a 34 inch waist to a 42 inch waist. I do walk in nice weather. Just started this thread to see how others in my shoes felt.
I quit twice in my life. Once in 1974 for 9 years. I went from 165 lbs. to 185 fast. Then I started back. I did not lose the weight. I quit again in 2011 at 190 lbs. I now have a weight of 265 lbs. My personal opinion is that a person can quit without gaining weight. It's a matter of how much you eat and how much exercise you get. The only sure thing is that sooner or later, and probably sooner, you will lose weight if you smoke, when you get cancer and die.
I was a heavy pack+/day smoker and smoked for over 15 years before I quit. I quit two times, and the second time was successful (since 2006, anyway). I did not gain weight either time. I told myself even if I did I would not go back to smoking. I still feel that way. Smoking had a torturous mental grip on me and I would never choose to partner up with that devil again over a few pounds of flab, or for any other reason for that matter

Are you serious?!?!?! You just have to replace the smoking with healthy behaviors. Sounds like you replaced it with food, exchanging one addiction for another. Remember why you quit smoking in the first place, then ask yourself this question again.
Weight gain after quitting smoking isn't inevitable, it's a choice. I was, for many years, a serial quitter (have now quit, it's been over two years.) I did gain weight on one of my early quit attempts...but then I figured that since every time I ate or drank something to "replace" the urge for a smoke. So, I ate less often, and in most of my subsequent quits either maintained or LOST weight. Because I ate less.
I did however get addicted to chewing plastic straws!
