Fasting is NOT and never has been a viable weight-loss strategy.
Regular excercise and a healthy, low-fat & low-sugar diet HAVE been proved time and again to work, however. In fact, this is the ONLY real means to lose weight permanently and increase your health.
The problem with fasting is that when you do it, say, go more than 10 hours or so without eating, your body goes into a sort of "starvation mode" so it is going to latch onto and then store every single available calorie--especially fat cals--the next time you eat. This is why it has been proven that people who skip breakfast often actually gain weight.
Your "skip the sandwich instead of exercise" is only viable for the shirt term. That is: sure, for that particualr day you will cut your overall net calorie intake, and maybe wake-up the next morning a lb. lighter, but skipping meals is not a longterm strategy; it's detrimental.
And you might not even drop a pound or so that day, since we are all likely to simply over-indulge in our next meal--after skipping the previous one--and thus negate any possible short-term weight-loss.
There is so much nonsense in this post I don't even know where to begin.
How about reading the thread on Intermittent Fasting (for life extension) and getting some more modern ideas on eating. Who decided that we are supposed to have three - no more, no less - meals a day?
And it has NOT been shown, much less PROVEN that "skipping" breakfast is detrimental ..or leads to weight gain?... or that low fat diets "work" to do anything more than make you hungry real quick.
And to say that your body goes into "starvation mode" after 10 hours w/out food and then goes into some absurd "fat-storing-frenzy" the next time you eat is laughable at best, and outright fantasy at worst.
I along with many others, do IF on a 2-day /week regime and NEVER have I experienced over-indulging at my next meal. In fact I found my appetite to be robust, but satiated easily.

I agree with you 100%. This is the kind of BS that someone is spreading around and I can't quite figure out who is making the money off of it. Its the same concept as the claims that say your metabolism speeds up or slows down depending on how often you eat -- it is all BS.
The ones who are making the most money are supplement companies. Bodybuilders say to eat at least 6 times a day so it boots your metabolism and you lose fat faster blah blah blah so people say "well I don't have time to cook/prepare 6 meals a day" so of course they say "Well, buy our AMAZING 0 FAT 0 SUGAR 0 EVERYTHING PROTEIN BARS AND PROTEIN SHAKES AND WITHOUT EVEN GOING TO THE GYM YOU WILL LOSE STONES OF FAT EVERY HOUR". Seriously, how did people million years ago eat ? They didn't eat in the morning but they went haunting. Also, I have a muslim friend who just finished ramadam and he only ate twice a day (which they say "slows your metabolism and it's harder to lose fat) and even though he was already muscular and had abs, he looks even better, you can see the striations in his chest and veins on his arms. It's all about calories in/out. If you eat less than you burn, you lose fat. Doing sports is good because if you burn 2000 calories a day without doing anything, you need to eat 1500 calories to lose weight, but if you also do sports and burn extra 500 calories you will burn 2500 calories a day, so you can eat 500 calories more and still be in a deficit and still lose weight (I love eating, that's why I play 2 sports lol)

You are probably right on about that. And look at the JUNK that the manufacturers put in their protein powders, shakes, etc.

I avoid fasting in order to avoid other stuff that comes with it, such as fainting and a headache that's so bad I can barely remember my own name.
Seriously, if you're eating the sandwich just to have something to do rather than because of hunger, skip it, but if you're talking about your lunch, you should eat it (or maybe find something a little healthier, depending on what's in the sandwich).
Exercise and diet are both key to weight loss and optimal health. Anyone who tells you to skip exercise is lazy and should be ignored. It's far easier to lose weight if you are exercising. To lose weight at a decent rate (1 pound a week) without exercise, most people would have to reduce their caloric intake to 1500-1700 calories per day. Most people can't do this without feeling like they are starving to death, and it is in fact bad for you because your body won't get all the nutrients it needs - this results in most people failing the diet.
Get an hour of vigorous exercise (even for an out of shape person, that can still burn 500 calories - a person with a high level of physical fitness can burn 1,000 calories in an hour) a day and eat 2,000-2,700 calories per day (depending on exercise level, obviously you can eat even more if you increase your activity levels - it's possible to lose weight eating 5k calories a day for the very active, for example) and still lose a pound a week, without ever feeling hungry. Make sure to keep your caloric intake from carbs below 45%, intake from protein at least 15% (at least 25% if you're a male weight lifter), and eat plenty of vegetables, and you won't ever feel hungry. Obviously all these numbers are ballpark, and can vary depending on a person's age, weight, sex, metabolism type, etc.
Also, weight loss without exercise results in the loss of a lot of muscle mass, which obviously isn't good for many reasons. Ever see people who lose lots of weight without exercise? They look unhealthy due to all the loss of muscle mass and how malnutritioned they are.
A sandwich has about 500 calories. Power walking for an hour burns about 500 calories.
Let's assume those numbers are correct.
Why should I choose to exercise for an entire hour rather than just skip the sandwich?
I do not understand the economics of exercise.
You've nailed it. The problem is its a lot easier for me to exercise for an hour than to skip the sandwich, but as you have pointed out it is nowhere near as effective.

That is true!
Exercise is always better than fasting.. fasting is not good!
