I'm going to be joining a gym but can't decide on which one to choose. They each have their pros and cons, relating to cost, distance and amenities. Here's my choices:

Gym A: Located a 3 minute walk from my apartment, open 24 hours during the week, offers a multitude of free classes, has a rock climbing wall, boxing ring, loads of new equipment. The gym is pretty crowded. The cost is roughly $85/month plus a $200 initiation fee which may be waived, and you must sign a contract by the year (one or two), and if you sign the one year, you get the last two months free, so it boils down to really about $70/month when you take that into account.

Gym B: Located a 15-20 minute walk from my apartment. Hours are fairly standard gym hours, open from around 6am-10pm during the week, and closing a bit earlier on the weekends. Initiation fee of $100 with monthly fees of $70, if you do month-to-month. If you sign up for a full year, it brings it down to around $60/month. Gym offers a few free classes, equipment looks good, gym isn't too crowded.

Gym C: Located a 10 minute walk and a 7 minute subway ride away. There is a $50 initiation fee and monthly dues of $30. The gym is very bare bones. No fancy equipment, no classes offered, etc. Gym attracts a bit of a rough crowd. The hours are the usual 6-10ish.

Which gym would you choose? Gym A is of course the most convenient and that is it's big selling point. It's easy to be sucked in by the fancy amenities, but then I tell myself that I have never taken a class in a gym and really tend to just go for the weights, so really, I don't need much in a gym. I also like the fact that Gym A is 24 hours considering that I tend to like to work out late at night after the crowds have died down. It's just the cost that gives me pause. If Gyms B or C were closer, I would choose them in a heartbeat, but it's the fact that I fell off the gym wagon months ago and it's hard to get back on, and I just feel like the farther away the gym is, the less likely I am to go, especially the colder it gets (note: this is in NYC, hence the walking as opposed to driving).

I stay away from gyms. I've read too many stories of people having heart attacks on treadmills. You're safer at home or the mall.

We lived less than a minute drive from the gym, paid $50/mo (2people) and hardly ever went. Now, we live 30+ miles away, pay $90/mo (2 people) and combined have lost 70+ lbs. It's about dedication and how much you like your gym. That's my experience anyway!

I say Gym B:

Because if it takes you more than 20 minutes to walk/jog over there, then you got some of your cardio done. Now all you have to do is some light weight training and maybe a Pilates/Yoga class. Then you're done and you do another 20 minute walk/jog back home....I think that's great way to workout. You did everything in 1 day!! I think that's awesome...

I would go for gym B, why? For one it opens during weekends - should your week get tiringly crazy. Secondly it is not so busy - which means you dont fight over or wait for equipment. Thirdly you dont struggle getting some advise from trainer because its busy. And then theres the cardio workout covered by walking. Which of the three gyms do think has the best trainers? Thats very important.

By the way, for those who don't know me, this post was a joke. Clearly, laying on the couch and channel surfing at home is not the same as going to gym and watching TV on the treadmill.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to do a trial run with Gym B. They give a free two week membership, and I'll see how it goes. It's not so much the walk that bothers me. It's the walk in the freezing cold at this time of year that does. I think it will be a choice between gyms A and B though.
