Interesting responses. I think soda does have different effect on different people. I haven't drank it since I was in school. I'd pick up a liter bottle of Pepsi everyday for lunch and drink it throughout the afternoon as a pick me up. Never gained a pound. Things might be a little different now that I'm in my 30's though.

Yes it would most likely be very different at your current age. Just a 12oz can of soda is jam packed full of sugar which turns into fat and would show on someone in their 30s a lot faster than it does to a younger person.
I suppose if you can cut out sugar somewhere else in your diet then you can make room for a soda but there are plenty of other flavored drinks you could find with less sugar in them. I don't think it's worth it to drink soda. At all.
I gave up soda completley several years ago and don't miss it at all. I pretty much replaced it with water, and I'm sure I'm much better off without it. I still drink a sugary ice coffee almost every day, but that's about my only sugary vice, and I'm not giving that up.
For years, I've been a serious runner and triathlete. Drink at least one soda a day. No effect on me.
You can get away with a little more sugar if you are serious about cardio exercise. Good to take in the high glycemic index substances during exercise when your body can use them.
soda does not directly cause weight gain. Some nutritionists believe it may indirectly cause weight gain by stimulating sweet triggers in the brain without the corresponding calories potentially causing the body to crave more sweet food. As a diet soda drinker, this has not been my personal experience.
Some people will caution against drinking diet soda because sodium leads to water retention. However, the sodium content is minimal compared to the food we eat during the day. A entire 2 Liter of Diet Coke has the same amount of sodium as two McDonalds Chicken McNuggets (without any sauce) and less than 1/4 the amount of sodium as a seemingly healthy McDonald Grilled Chicken Southwest Salad.
