Depends on the routine. If you do a full body routine, an hour or longer sounds normal. But if you are doing upper body or lower body, then 1 hour is too long. Personally I do full body workouts three times per week. I'm in the gym for about 1 hour each of those days.
I was talking to a coworker recently and she told me that for one workout, she lifted weights for two hours.
I've also seen videos of bodybuilder types claiming they work out for hours at a gym.
Personally I just don't understand how someone can lift weights for hours at a gym.
Most of my workouts with weights doesn't take more than 30 minutes. And I don't sit around fiddling with my cell phone or sitting for long rest periods. I work out 1-2 bodyparts per workout. I take relatively short rest periods, enough so that I can give max effort on whatever I am working out. My muscles are really pumped and I can barely lift anymore.
Sure, if I decide to do cardio, that could make my time at the gym longer, an hour and a half most at tops if I'm really trying to lose weight. But just lifting weights, about 30 minutes.
Well there ya go. Not everyone does that.
For me, I have too many demands on my time to make to the gym often as I would like, so I usually have to wind up doing full-body workouts in one evening. And I am there for a couple of hours, solid working.
I'm not a beginner. I need about ~2 hours, twice a week.
My gym is extremely popular, lots of eye candy girls in full makeup and trendy skin tight clothes to distract me, lots of dudebros lugging full gallons of water to navigate around. I'm not the biggest guy, but big enough that MOST people don't dare ask "how many sets you got left?". If there's 40 treadmills, 40 of them are occupied during peak hours of 5pm-8pm.
I sweat like a pig, and pant like a dog. I hover around 12% body fat. I log everything I do in a little notebook. I leave my phone in the car.
On weekends, I like long-slow-cardio, which might be 30 miles on my bike at the beach, or skate for 15, or run/jog for 5. I'm at THE BEACH so I'm in no hurry, I might spend 4 hours all told. I charge my mp3 player like most people charge their phone (near daily).
Usually about an hr. at the gym. I pretty much only to weight training there, which lasts around 30-45min, rest of the time is for warm up and cool down.
Most all of my cardio is outdoors.
It's not the length of time, it's the quality. I suspect OP and others know that though.
Wow, I feel like a slacker. I don't really care. I am glad I workout.
I do the stair climber for 15-25 minutes and then do two different leg machines (3 sets of 15), one chest machine (60 pounds) at 3 sets and 15 reps, then free weights for triceps and some other muscles. What I am saying is that, I have no idea what I am doing in the gym...I'm sure I could use help but it keeps me in shape in under an hour. I go as fast as I can on the weights because it is boring and I have a son.
I used to go everyday but now just 4 days a week because I thought I was getting to "big"!
I am 5"8 115. 44 year old. Don't drink. Eat mostly beans and little meat. Only drink water with the exception of a giant cup of coffee with a huge amount of Italian Sweet Cream creamer!
When I first moved to this new city in which I knew no one, I'd go to the gym after work every day and lift for 1.5-2 hours every time. A lot of this was a result of showing up at the gym around 4:30pm, I'd have to wait for equipment often.
Now I go in before work (1000x better in every way) and I lift for 40 minutes, 4x/week. When I do cardio, it's also for 40 minutes.
