My idea of a good gym is one that has all the right, old-fashioned equipment. Most of the so-called modern machines are designed to make their users think they're having a good workout, but nothing takes the place of straight, hard resistance, for serious exercisers. I don't need any trainers or classes and wouldn't want to pay for something I don't use.

I guess it depends on the YMCA gym. The one I used didn't have a pool, and was the cheapest gym in town, at the time. There was no Planet Fitness, back then, or other cheap chains.

Well good for you! I take it you do not belong to a gym, and if not, why in the heck are you responding to this thread?
I am not sure what a 'serious exerciser' is, but I am pretty sure you don't have to stick to old fashioned equipment (whatever that is) to be one. And I am pretty sure I am a serious exerciser as most of the people on this board.
And I know when I am having a good workout without any machine telling me anything.
