I've noticed a trend lately and it's especially odd to me here in hot/sunny Florida - men who wear TIGHTS under their shorts while working out. They are typically younger males who do this. Is this simply a fashion trend for millennials or does this serve some sort of a purpose? They aren't just worn on leg days so my guess it's simply out of vanity, lots of NBA players wear them.

If this were, say, Minnesota in February I might get it a little more but these guys are wearing them in Florida on very hot/muggy days. I don't get it.

It was a big fashion thing back in the early 90's, especially with the influence of the NBA where many notable players wore lycra type shorts under their uniform shorts (like MJ). Nowadays compression shorts/leggings are also in.

Yeah, so these tights are the ones that go all the way past your ankles. Something that reminds me of a ballet dancer. These aren't just the compression shorts that many guys wear.

OP said under their workout shorts.

My bet is that they're compression tights and no, 99% of "normal" folks working out don't need them.

You should have seen how it was back in the late 80's/early 90's, where guys would wear biker type shorts and even long skin tight lycra leggings by themselves.

I wear them as under garments when I work out because they are more comfy that other types of underwear, yet still supportive for my aging muscles. I have also ridden bicycles for decades and gotten used to them for support, warmth, wicking and reducing road rash in the event of a fall.

This I can understand, but the average dude in my gym simply lifts weights and then does 20-30 mins of cardio.

Some guys also wear the compression shirts in addition to the tights, so they're covered from head to toe with this stuff. One in particular we all call "pig pen" because he works up such a sweat in that outfit that within 15 minutes you can smell his stench from 10+ feet away. I don't care if he does wipe down machines or benches, I'm not using any of them after he does.

Maybe a fashion trend but compression tights/pants also serve a purpose. They improve circulation and provide muscle support.
