I use to swim for exercise but had to stop after an unrelated shoulder injury. Try alternating swim strokes for more exercise. Try adding rowing machine to your exercise. Get instruction to learn how to use it properly. Use one near a mirror so you can watch your form for proper movement. Once you get the proper movement down it is a great whole body cardio exercise you can do in front of a tv. It’s good to change up the exercise routine every so often.
With my daughter attending swimming classes and training sessions, I start to follow her once a week. Plus it's summer. Hopefully I can continue after that. Still learning freestyle and butterfly.
I had not swam that much in over 40 years and have been trying to swim laps. I used to swim a mile at a time. Swimming 10-12 laps is my limit right now.
My freestyle has greatly improved lately after I changed my breathing frequency. Start to fall in love with it and want to exercise more. It makes me feel decent, strong and healthy.
I swam for about a year and had started from scratch with learning how to swim, to working up to a mile of lap swimming per session (2-3x week). But I WAY overdid it pushing myself so hard to make it a goal to swim a mile of laps by the end of the first year. I made my goal but with the price of shoulder impingement and possible rotator cuff tear. I had to stop swimming in December 2021 because I could barely lift my right arm at that point and getting dressed or putting on a coat was a nightmare. I spent four months in PT after going to an orthopedic doctor to get my arm to a more functional level (still trying to avoid surgery).
I used to open water swim too, so this summer I have gone out to the lake a few times and gently experimented with swimming front crawl, backstroke, a little breast stroke, or just floating and so on. Still having too much pain to return to lap swimming on a regular basis. I have been able to work up to some calisthenics, back to dancing, and other activities but pulling and pushing my arm through water is still painful.
Be careful not to push too hard like I did! Really listen to your body and if you are tired stop. Not out of breath tired, but feeling fatigue or aching in limbs etc. If I could have gone back in time knowing what I know now, I would have been far more content to just leave it at a half mile like I did for a long time.
