Interesting. I just watched a "Dateline" rerun in which a husband was accused of murdering his fitness-conscious wife who died this same way. The prosecution "proved" that anyone could easily wriggle out from under the bar if necessary, so he must've sat on her and pressed it against her neck. The fact that her spine wasn't severed or vertebrae crushed (they claimed "it would've come down like a guillotine") further condemned him. I wonder if he could use this video in an appeal?
I just never understand people who don't use safety bars. It's like that one guy who died doing squats, he couldn't get out of the bottom position of the lift and his spotter was woefully inadequate to deal with it. If there had been safety bars he could have been saved. Granted not sure if the type of cage he was in allows safety bars, but still.
Also, some will point out that he sealed his fate when he put collars on the ends of the plates, you never want to do that.
The article mentioned he setup a tripod to film it, but the video I saw, the angle seems to be from some security camera. He might have filmed it, and likely the parents never released it. The gym probably released this video to show no foul play was involved.
People in the gym are usually given instructions before handling equipment, especially free-weights, but if you ignore the instructions it's all on you, literally.
I had my own equipment at home and no spotter, so I had to pay very close attention to the loads I worked.
Typically, people work out in a GYM to show off, and that can lead to these mistakes.
I have a great appreciation for the weight machines.
