I had my yoga class tonight and I was thinking about what I've learned from yoga...
-how to breath, which helps me relax
-how it feels when my muscles are well-used and stretched (good)
-how to meditate and quiet my always-active mind (monkey mind)
-how nice my sister yoga classmates are
-where my muscles are tight (areas that need more attention)
-to be not competitive, to go at my own pace
-the power of om-ing--it feels so good to make this sound
-to take time for myself even when I don't have the time, it appears
The list could go on, but I wonder if you've come to some realizations with your yoga practice, too and would want to share--even if you just want to say how much you like it (or don't!)
I have been doing yoga since 1975. I had been pregnant with my daughter and gained 50 lbs!!! I started doing Kareens yoga was a show that was on ,in the mornings after my son was born. I only gained 20 lbs with him . I was able to get into a bikini and look good when he was 6 mos. old . I am 54 now; and a truck driver . My weight is stable because I listen to my body. Yoga teaches you that. If it wants to eat only once a day that is what it gets. But.... if it wants a chocolate bar (dark chocolate) it gets that too. I do yoga while I drive. My face exercises- the Lion etc. It has kept me sane at times when traffic goes nuts!!! I just Ohmmmm my way through it> LOL . Enjoy
Every time I get out the mat, they have to remind me that for them, this is great fun and they are oh-so-much better at certain poses.
I strive to be mindful. I have a new goal to do my practice every morning before coffee. So far so good.
Except for the cats. They make me laugh (which can't be all bad, right?).
Ive been doing vinyasa yoga for some time now. While I am not as hard core as many people I know who end up teaching, I do practice daily or at the very least, do a few Sun Salutations before practicing my martial arts. I even use several asanas as a warm ups for when I teach my taichi classes.
Some of what it taught me:
1. The importance of form in all movements.
2. The correct way to coordinate breath with movements.
3. How to relax.
I love yoga....have you guys tried bikram's yoga? Wow.....
