I was using the jump rope as apart of my routine. I'd do sets of 50 and then work my way up to 100 and then 150 and then 200. If I messed up, I'd force myself to start over. I loved it and I saw quick results, my butt and legs, as well as arms, slimmed very quickly. I'd use it as a warm up and then a cool down.
I HATE jumping rope in my Nike Shox. They have those four little circle/spring things at the heel and the rope keeps getting caught on them. I jump in any other shoes (preferably my martial arts shoes) or barefoot if in my garage on a mat.
Ha, the same thing happens when I jump with my Shox. I just decided to jump higher, lol.
Jumping rope isn't good cardio; it's just about the ultimate cardio! Think about it: anyone in good ahspe can jog for 20 minutes, or ride a bike for 30 minutes, or even swim for half an hour. But I'd reckon that about 80% of people who even go to the gym and do cardio or aerobic routines 3-4 times a week could NOT jump rope nonstop for a mere five minutes!
I used to love jumping rope, especially about seven years ago when I first got into my boxing kick. But alas, 20 years of playing baseball in cleats has finally caught up with me at age 47, so the old knees can't take it any more. These days I have to get my cardio via the treadmill of swimming pool.
