I want to know whether bench pressing helps reduce fat in the lower abdomen. I have never tried bench pressing before, but am willing to give it a shot. I have fat build up on my stomach, and would like to tone it down. I have heard that bench pressing helps a lot, but has anyone actually experienced a decent decrease in belly fat after bench pressing.

FYI, I am a 21 year old male 6' and 196 lb.

It all starts in the kitchen. Then do front squats and kettlebell swings (once you have learned proper form) if you are looking for exercises that will strengthen your mid-section.

Only insofar as it burns calories, which is true of weightlifting and exercise in general. Jogging and diet would be better. I have always been skeptical of exercises to target fat in a particular spot. If you want to lose fat on your stomach (love handles, manboobs, take your pic) you have to burn fat period. Everyone has a different body, and when losing weight the body loses it from different places. I have battled my weight since preadolescence, and when I lose weight the first place I see it is in my neck, followed by my back, stomach and finally chest. If you bench press enough, along with incline bench, dumbbell flys, pushups, you will get bigger pecs, and bigger pecs can create the ILLUSION of a smaller stomach, especially as it expands beyond the dimension of the stomach. A broad muscular chest and shoulders can do a little bit to hide belly fat.

Count the calories of everything you eat.

You need to be in a calorie deficit mode to lose fat.

Start out by computing your BMR:

BMR Calculator

This is how many calories you would burn if you were laying in bed all day.

Next compute calories burned during exercise:

Calories Burned From Exercise | MyFitnessPal.com

Add the two together, and eat less calories than that total every day.

Or a more simple approach is just eat 10 - 12 times your goal weight in calories.

So if your goal is to weigh 150, then eat around 1500 - 1700 calories each day.

Using this approach, you will lose 1 - 2lbs per week.

To the OP -- don't stop bench pressing, but DEFINITELY pay attention to the advice above. Get your diet under control first (pay attention to your macronutrients), but continue to work out.

For the average person, 65% of their body is formed in the kitchen, 25% in the gym, and 10% in sleep. At 21, you're a testosterone machine, so clean up your diet, hit the gym, and watch the results happen fairly quickly.

1. There is no such thing as spot reduction.

2. Any physical activity, whether it is bench pressing or doing jumping jacks can help you lose excess fat as long as you are at a caloric deficit at the end of the day.

If you have excess fat:

-Lift weights 3x a week.
-Have 1 g of protein per lb of lean body mass.
-Lower calorie intake so you are losing 1-2 lbs/week.

I took this from here:

No. Not directly anyway.

Change your diet. That'll be a major factor in losing fat.

yes, bench pressing has been proven to reduce belly fat by 36% in mice in laboratory tests. also, studies performed on the jersey shore have proven that screaming "beefcaaaaake!!!!! while lift heavy weights helps to multiply the benefits of weight lifting by 300%!!
