I notice that you are posting from New Mexico, but seem to have had experience in Fairbanks. There was a singer-songwriter in Fairbanks, back in the late 1970s, who was splitting time between New Mexico and Fairbanks. I heard him and his band a couple of times and was quite impressed. Do you by any chance know about this guy; what happened to him; is he still playing music? I'd like to know because he had a nice country-rock sound and wrote great lyrics. But, of course, I can't remember his name.

I never locked my doors in Fairbanks. It's very safe there. I guess it just depends on how cool your stuff is?

I'm actually curious about crime now, based on what a couple people have said. Arcticracer, do you live "in town" or out? You certainly have had bad luck with the break ins!

Also, what about if you live "out" a bit more...not really far out, but say 15 - 30 miles? Do you have a problem with people breaking in your home? I've read stories from other parts of Alaska where people who have remoter cabins/homes have problems with people breaking in and vandalizing their property. Is this a common phenomena?

Yes yes, I'm "one of those people" who's considering moving there. Because of my work, I can leave my home empty for months at a time. I wonder if it's a cause for concern....

I have friends and family in Fairbanks who leave their doors unlocked and the keys in the vehicles. I never did that nor would I begin now. My wife used to do that and then on our honeymoon, her car stereo was stolen. She now believes in locking things up as I do.

The practice of getting people to house-sit while gone on vacation is very common in Fairbanks, especially in the winter. It is less about security and more about keeping the water running so that the pipes won't freeze!

No, afraid I don't know him.
We just moved to NM a year ago after living in a couple of other places since we left Fairbanks.

To be honest, the only place I have lived and actually locked stuff up was Aberdeen Washington, that place is a arm pit.

I have friends who never lock stuff up, even when they go away on vacation. Never a problem. I've been fortunate too, I leave my house empty months and months at a time and have never had a break in, even though I live close to a housing project. I've been mugged a few times though (not where my home is!), guess bad luck runs in different ways...
