I am planning a move to Fairbanks between May and October 2011. The first eight months of my time in Alaska will be working as a photographer on a cruise ship and in hotels (until I am able to sign a lease) when not aboard a ship. I am ideally looking at Fairbanks but am willing to consider other places if there are any with better job opportunities. I am wondering if there are any photography opportunities related to tourism that I could look into. Or, how difficult is it to find work as a freelance portrait/real estate photographer in areas of Alaska? If I wanted to find a minimum wage part-time job in retail or food, are those available? I'm not concerned with pay as much as I am with finding a job that I enjoy. I currently operate a very successful portrait photography business in Austin, TX but obviously would be starting completely over once I move, and will have several factors (weather, cost of equipment/studio space, etc.) to think about. I have the means to make the move and will be able to survive on what I'll have saved from my time on board for about 3 months. Is it reasonable for me to hope that I can eventually earn a modest living as a photographer in Alaska?

Alaska has a diverse abundant population of PROfessional photographers.

It doesn't matter in which part of the state you settle down. Pro's are firmly implanted throughout this whole treasure trove of a State, that provides some of the most fantastic scenery / wildlife on the entire planet.

You will have no problem finding 'documented' professionals in every part of this state
