To get to Fairbanks from the lower 48 without going through Canada, without flying? How much would it cost?

I can get through legally, but my boyfriend doesn't have a passport (and can't get one), has previous DUI's, etc.

You'll have to drive to Whittier and take the Cross Gulf Ferry to Bellingham. It goes every couple of weeks in the summer, I think once a month in the winter.

Phew... $1800!

It's cheaper to leave him behind and fly him up later.

How many years ago were he's DUI's?
I have talked with 5 different Canadian board and immigration people, and of them told me that the statute of limitations is 15 years. They told me when asked about any crimes/DUI's, just say no.

Oh, so wrong. If you're in their system you'll be turned back.

That's just it, if you are not in the Canadian system, and it has been over 15 years, you're ok. That is just what the board and immigration people have told me.

Apologies for the curt response above. That may be it, but I know folks who've been turned away who've made it through numerous times previously only to find out they'd come up in the system between the last time they made it across the border and the time they were refused. Folks with DUIs, DVs, outstanding traffic violations - if you're in a cross-reference category, they'll turn you right around. One of our contractors sent a driller down to the states to drive a drill back and he was refused because of an old DUI - and that was in '08, so they've been up to speed on the records for some time. I may not be all right or all wrong and I don't know about the time limit, but my experience has been it's a no-go-show for these folks.

I've heard the same kind of thing from people who've tried to drive through. And I've heard of people with the same issues who have had no problems.

That's the problem. The Canadian Immigration officials have access to the US NCIC database and can run triple "I" background checks. If you've done it they can find out about it. Regardless of how long ago it has been.
