Looking at the latest forecast models and hearing things on TV it appears that the forecast models have grossly underestimated the true depth and extreme-ness of the cold air up there. Ive never been to Fairbanks in winter. Just love the cold. Looking to live vicariously through you all. Any cool stories about the cold? I've watched nearly every video on youtube about Fairbanks cold weather and also Tok cold weather. Tires freeze to the ground and stuff. Diff fluid is so thick in small AWD cars (like subarus) that they hardly move.

It's not extremely cold at the moment. According tto the National Weather Service, it's -12 degrees F. by the Fairbanks International Airport. The temperatures in this area of Fairbanks are somewhat similar to the areas along the Richardson Highway though North Pole. The City of North Pole is located approximately 14-16 miles from Fairbanks.

There are some photos of dog mushing, sunsets and things like that in this thread. I have to take some photos of Fairbanks and post them in that thread, although others in this forum are more than welcome to post any photo (s) of Fairbanks and vicinity.

I wanted to see how cold it has to be to freeze 90 proof whiskey. In this case, several years ago, around -50.

We did briefly touch -40 a few mornings ago, but it's not really anything unusual. We've just been dramatically warmer than normal for the last two winters. I'm happy that it's feeling like it should now.

Moved to AK in 1988. In January of 89 all of AK had a real cold snap. Anchorage got to 40 below. Oil in the car was like molasses. If you got the car started, you had to keep it running. They said that some places that were 60 below that you didn't slam the car doors shut or the door handle would fall off.

Yeah, those plastic door handles will snap right off when it gets cold. A friend of mine tried to get a welder to fabricate him a handle for an older Pathfinder. While I understand the sentiment, I told him it would be cheaper and easier to just replace it.

Well, it seems that after the snow fell for a couple of days already, now it may get colder. It is -35 degrees by the Airport this early Sunday afternoon (December 4, 2016). The forecast is for the temperature to drop from -20 to perhaps -40 degrees this week.

Good stuff. I love it. I'm looking forward to near or at zero F temps here in Northeastern wa state.

^ Nice pic heathen .

This winter has been much colder so far than my previous two. Last winters coldest temp recorded at my land was -30 in November. This winter it has hit -39 here with several days with -30 or colder temps. It's -33 below here right now and it's only 6:30, so maybe I will record my first -40 tonight. I have experienced -47 since I've been up here just not at my land.

I'm flying through the wood faster than expected this year with the new bigger place. I've burned a cord and a half so far compared to last winters two cords total. Have approx 1100 square feet now compared to last winters 300 so I'm not complaining.

Solar panels are making next to no power right now. I have direct sunlight from maybe 10 to 145 before it dips behind the mountains. The oil in my honda generator is freezing up almost instantly if left outside not running.

Ironically, my jeep is overheating in these temps. Maybe the thermostat? I'll find out tomorrow.

I did book my whole family round trip tickets to florida for 3 weeks in Jan/Feb today to ease the pain. Only $455 a piece out of fairbanks which is the cheapest I've ever found.

Try 0-40 synthetic oil in the Honda, it will help. I use Amsoil 0-40 in my generators. It is thin in the winter and will stand up to the heat in the summer.
pour point is -60f

Thanks, the lightest oil I can find local is 0w-20 synthetic. I will try that if this cold keeps up. Have been using 5w-20 synthetic as of late.
