Personally, I would invest grandma's money and forget the coat.
Unless you are really wealthy, you will be using public transportation in NYC a lot. That coat would be filthy and ratty in no time. In a place like NYC, you need something warm and washable, preferably a dark color. Plus, wearing a coat like that makes you a walking target for thieves. They will ASSUME there is something worth having in that purse because of the coat. And you will have to pay to clean it, store it, and insure it.
Yes, it's pretty. But I see that coat on an older woman. 70/80 or so.
If you HAD any experience traveling, you'd know that.
I just would like to say I have experience traveling and living overseas, and fur is becoming more and more demode' everywhere I have been to in the last few years. Especially the huge, long coats, those are totally out. Elegance is in small details, always.
Just an opinion, not meant to be impolite to anyone.
Just a practical tip to the OP: If you are going with fur then you need to look for a coat shorter in length. NYC winters are MURDER on the bottoms of any coats. It doesn't matter how many inches the snow is, you will be leaping over HUGE black, ice puddles at every corner. A coat in the length you have shown will get destroyed - not to mention the ice mixed in with the salt/sand which the city puts down. Also, for your age group, think about going with a sheared fur coat.
Oh honey, just say no! I grew up in NYC and I can tell you that coat is going to turn heads for all the wrong reasons (it even makes the girl modeling it look like a high-end escort). If you're looking for an investment piece, get something like a Cartier watch, they go up in value after several years. My mother (who only brings out her furs for going to the Met) told me once that when you're young, you should wear classic and simple items because everyone should concentrate on your face. Take your money and go to Bergdorfs and they will help you find a beautiful and sensible coat for the winter.
Yes, you'll find plenty of "older" ladies that deck the halls with mink in NYC. As for college-age girls? Very rarely. I know because I was a college girl in NYC in the past 5 years.
I'm going to be going back to school in NYC next fall and would like a warm and glamorous coat. What do you think of this coat-does it look tasteful and not matronly or tacky? I don't want to stick out like a soar thumb(from my understanding and observations people still wear fur in nyc quite a bit)
People with money that like fur still wear it. It's a symbol of wealth and luxury. There are so many animal lovers in Hollywood though, so it's not as if you'll commonly see it being donned in People magazine. But the idea that it's old fashioned or out of style is simply false.
I disagree. It is NOT a symbol of wealth and luxury.
It is the opposite now and yes, very much out of style.
Wearing fur is no longer associated with wealth, but a lack of taste, education and refinement.
Unless, as mentioned above, you have blue hair and sensible shoes.
The OP stated that she wanted to look "glamorous" - that was where many of us got the idea that she wanted to impress other people.
I, and others who are acquainted with what young woman who attend college in NYC and else where, but especially NYC, wear want to help her not to make a costly mistake. She posed the question.
While I have no desire to wear fur and I find it to be horrible and cruel, she did not ask what people thought about the fur debate, She did ask if this was an appropriate coat for a student (In I am assuming, assuming college) in NYC and the answer is NO, It is not.
These are the reasons:
You have a right to your own beliefs, but many, many, people no longer associate fur with glamor. They associate it with one of, or a combination of, the following things -
1. conspicuous consumption.
2. selfish cruelty (think Cruella DeVille)
3.lower class people who are trying to appear wealthy - a reason why many newly rich athletes and performers where fur. Especially those from impoverished backgrounds.
4. Mafia wives.
5. Call Girls
6. misplaced priorities
7. New Yorkers will think that you have watched one too many episodes of "Sex and The City"
8. There is a negative correlation between fur wearing and academics. I have never seen, nor do I know of a single person with a PhD who wears fur.
Your teachers at college in NYC will most likely all have PhDs. Some, perhaps many, will have a negative view of fur which could impact your grades.
9. Other students may very well share this opinion.
I think that wearing something less controversial, and something that does not have so many negative associations would be a better choice.
