So, in the "real world" business professional dress and preppy are the same thing? I think not.
If that's how it is in the north east, I'm glad I've never lived there.
I've worked alongside, and respected greatly, guys in $500 Jos A Bank suits. I've also worked with, and despised fully, guys in multi-thousand dollar Brioni. Even if you've got lots of cash, repsect is earned by your actions.
I never said business clothes and preppy are one and the same. Stop putting words in my mouth
I was drawing an example as to how the logo adds to the image and respect, likening it to the TSA skipping a guy in formal wear, as opposed to groping the tourists.
Except that it's nothing at all like the TSA guys skipping the dude in a suit. That's simply playing the percentages and something they're trained to do.
I wasn't attempting to put words in your mouth, your posts simply read like you were comparing "preppy" dress with suit/tie dress. That's all.
I stand by my earlier statement that I'm not the least bit concerned about being "respected" by someone that would judge me on the labels of my clothing.
I don't think people generally associate clothes in Target and JC Penney to preppy.
At least from my experience. It's always Lacoste, Fred Perry, VV or Ralph Lauren etc.
I agree that lacoste, RL, Brooks are probably most associated with Preppy Clothing but you can find preppy type clothing anywhere and for cheap if you know what to look for.
TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Filene's Basement, Nordstrom Rack, and Saks Off 5th.
TJ and Marshalls (both TJX owned "brands") both carry Polo Ralph Lauren (blue label/PRL) on a regular basis. Polo shirts, either interlock or mesh (mesh being the "better") go for $30/35. PRL shorts were $30, and the khakis were $25. They are neither factory seconds nor knockoffs (big law suits in the latter). Filene's Basement carried various RL and Lacoste accessories (watches, belts, sunglasses) in the $25 range. I picked up a PRL wallet for $25 with a $110 MSRP.
Marshall's, the Rack, and Off 5th carry a wide range of polos, shorts, and shoes (Sperry, Cole Haan, Allen Edmonds, Faconnable, Vineyard Vines) at prices significantly below retail. Sperry's go for $50 instead of $80, Cole Haan for $80-110 instead of $200 etc. Lacoste apparel is harder to find on sale. I did find a polo at Lord and Taylor at $50, but because of Lacoste's relatively tight control over prole drift, you won't see it discounted as deeply as the PRL line.
IMO, Brooks Bros is not worth it for casual apparel (as an aside).
If I was putting together a prep/ivy wardrobe and I didn't have any money I would stick with Ebay and buy used items. A used Izod polo from Ebay is much more authentic use of your money than buying an RL polo.Stay away from Kohls and Old Navy. You want to also score some Brooks Brothers button down collar oxfords.Pink is your friend.Stick with stone colored khakis-avoid jeans. You might haunt some thrift stores or Ebay for some Lilly Pulitzer wild pants .Don't forget no socks.
Search Izod,LL Bean,Brooks Brothers Lilly Pulitzer(buy a tie)Madras.Nantucket Reds Sperry Topsider. It is better to buy a used version of the right true prep thing than a new version of something from Kohls etc.
