The first pair look like slippers. The second pair is a run in the mill pair of oxfords which look as though they are made of soft leather and are probably comfortable. I prefer oxfords with some sort of cap or line across the toe, such as the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue or 5th Avenue.
OP, my Fred Perry picks which have been on my wish list for quite a while. My top objects of affection in order or priority. Something about that wreath drives me nuts.
Fred Perry - Lawrence Derby Suede Shoe (http://www.fredperry.com/footwear/men/lawrence-derby-suede-shoe.html - broken link)
Fred Perry - Reprise Woven Stripe & Leather Shoe (http://www.fredperry.com/footwear/men/reprise-woven-stripe-leather-shoe.html - broken link)
Fred Perry - Deon Suede Shoe (http://www.fredperry.com/footwear/men/deon-suede-shoe.html - broken link)
Don't like this one but it comes close to the picture in the OP which is a very unappealing pair of shoes:
Fred Perry - Kent Nubuck & Suede Shoe (http://www.fredperry.com/footwear/men/kent-nubuck-suede-shoe.html - broken link)
These are examples. Don't really have to buy branded casual sneakers. Macy's, Dillard's and L&T carry similar ones at really bargain prices. I picked up cool top siders for 24 bucks, those listed on Sperry for 57.
Ugly and worse but what do I care, I really don't pay attention to mens shoes, or women's shoes for that matter.
As long as you like them and are comfortable it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks of them. Your taste, your shoes, your feet, your comfort.

If he felt that way, I'm sure he wouldn't have asked. He's a grown man, I'm sure he's already made the decision already.

I like the lawerence derby. Don't care for the others.
Are the first ones "shoes" or slippers? No heels whatsoever. I wouldn't like them for much walking. I'd also probably have a problem with the elastic across the instep. I have a high instep and often have problems with elastic like that. I'd have to try them, but honestly I think they're ugly.
Second pair looks okay, but I can't figure out what kind of sole that is and the general construction fastening the top to the sole. It almost looks like a moc glued to a soft sole. Very unusual for that type of look if so. If going for a dress shoe, I think I'd prefer a more traditional sole, and...
Coollhand -- excellent brand choice there with Allen Edmonds! Very, very good shoes, exceptional leathers, well made throughout. I don't think there's a "better made" shoe on the market.
