I was listening to a radio show last year where the host claimed that cargo shorts are "out of style". A few of my female friends confirmed this and said that guys look better in the regular khaki shorts/flat front/Chino shorts (without the extra pockets)...something like this:

I had the same discussion with a male friend who said the khaki shorts are nerdy looking and prefers cargos.

What do you prefer?

I'm a guy and I wear cargo shorts about 90% of the time that I wear shorts.

But, I do have a pair of khaki's for functions or business occasions (barbeque / golf / etc.).

I'm a guy and I wear both, depending upon the occasion.

Cargo shorts are really practical. With all the stuff we carry around these days, the extra pockets are really nice. I like to be not too long or baggy.

Chino shorts are also very nice for more formal occasions.

Of course. It just depends on the situation. As long as a guy isn't wearing 70s era short shorts, I don't notice.

What's your body type?

I like khaki shorts on a slimmer guy who can pull off the clean-casual or nerdy-chic look.

I don't think cargo shorts will ever go "out of style". They've been around since the late 90s (I know because I used to wear them back then). I still own a couple pairs. Guys wear them because (as someone already mentioned) it's practical to have shorts with that many pockets.

But I personally think flat-front khakis look better on guys.

I'm female and both wear cargo shorts, and also think any reasonably-fit guy looks fine in them.

I do not give a mouse's fart about what is in or out of style so that is not a factor for me.
