I am a youthful 67 year old and colored my hair up until 2 about years ago. I wear it very short and stylish and my grey is shiny and very pretty....I get lots of compliments on cut and color. Last week, my very honest cleaning lady asked me why I'd don't color my hair. She said, "you are very young and the grey makes you look too old." I wasn't in the least offended but it did make me think. I am tired of the same cut and color.....so want to do something different.....need a change. I know that coloring my hair would take at least ten years off my appearance.....but I don't really care about that. I asked my husband and he said, "I like it bc it's natural and very pretty the way it is." I don't know where I'm going with this post.....the actual thought of going through the hassle of coloring my hair every month and all those nasty chemicals makes me sad I really don't want to bother but I'm bored with the status quo. And letting it grow isn't an option bc that is way too hard to manage. Thoughts? Suggestions?
I will be honest with you, life is beautiful and an adventure I believe in trying new things. I have many customers who constantly make references about their hair going grey and I am not talking about positive references. They are not really happy with their grey hair but when I suggest coloring it they reject that option right away so I just say well then live with it and keep going grey and be unhappy. You should do what makes you happy but the way I see it you will never know if it is for you or not if you never try it.

In my experience it isn't so much the hair on some female's heads going grey that bothers them; rather the slow realization when drying off after bathing that it isn't lint "down there". *LOL* That transformation has been known to send many a woman rushing for the nearest bottle of booze.
Having grey myself..I say keep it that way! The growing out process after coloring is horrible as far as I'm concerned if you should decide you don't like it as well colored.
You could always get a wig for those times you feel like something different!
I loved when my hair had sliver running throughout my dark hair, loved when it became all over sliver but then it started to turn white/ gray, no I did like, I felt old, I looked washed out, my skin light, eyes green .. So at age 49 I went back to my natural darker warm color, with highlights added . I must say it took years off me..I'm 50... If I could've kept the sliver, sure thing, but white/ gray nope.
If your hair is gray the way EmmyLou Harris's hair is gray - I would love it.
Yes! So would I. Every so often, I notice someone with amazing and beautiful long gray or white hair. If the hair is cared for, it is beautiful! My once thick hair is too thin on the top for going long; it simply doesn't look good. So I envy the women with beautiful long thick hair who are around my age.
If you have occasion to sit behind older women at an event or at church, note how the hair of those who don't dye looks compared to the hair of those who do. Usually, the natural hair looks healthiest and best, assuming they are caring for their hair in comparable ways.
My town is full of "old hippies" - artistic types who moved here in the 60s and 70s when abandoned old Victorian homes were selling for a song - and many of the women here have absolutely gorgeous gray, silver, and white hair, long and short. I'm almost 60 and only have about 5 strands of gray, and I *wish* my hair would go gray, but judging from the rest of my family, that probably won't happen.
interestingly, I complimented a stranger on her beautiful shoulder-length gray hair one day, and she told me she was visiting from Texas and everyone there who knew her told her she should color it. I couldn't imagine why she would want to go to all that hassle and expense when her hair was such a nice silver color. She said she didn't plan on doing it.
... by 27 or 28 I was getting comments from total strangers about what had made me go gray so early. At that time, it really bothered me and I started coloring it --for the next 30+ years. Now I've let it grow out (which was a trial and took about a year), and I'm happy with it pretty much--it's a nice silver color and soft. I have one friend who said "Why did you stop coloring your hair--that gray makes you look old--I can't get used to it!" I tried reminding her how long I had been coloring it, what a hassle and expense it was, but she still didn't "get" it. Personally, I believe it's the cut/style rather than the color itself that is aging to a woman.
I'm grateful for the advice about keratin treatments and want to try that--if it can add some shine and control the flyaways.
Ok, i was asked for a photo and found some online photos at the link below that are close enough to my cut and color. If you click on it, there are rows of photos. My cut is almost exactly like the one on the girl in the fifth row, last girl on the right sitting with her hand under her chin. And my color is most similar to Pink's hair color...she is second row, 4th photo over. It gets gradually darker in the back of my head....at the nape of my neck it is charcoal with splashes of silver. There is no yellow in my hair.
Someone suggested bangs and I think I'll try that next. Seeing Pink in the photo reminds me of a cut of hers that I love....the one that is almost shaved around her ears and long on top
If any of you saw the Voice last season...Tessanne, the winner wore the style I am talking about. I have considered trying that but it feels a bit risky for my age.
I edited because when I opened the link below all the photos were switched around...but my cut is like the only photo of the woman with her hand under her chin The photo of the woman with my exact hair color disappeared and Pink's is the next most similar.
I'm 53 and I let my hair go grey now for over a year. I hated the whole process of getting it colored. Hours at the salon. Sorry, I could never do a good job at home and those box jobs look flat and dull no matter what the commercials want you to believe.
And what is it with people telling you, you look old? Do you look your age? Does everyone all of a sudden want to be some teeny bopper?
My older sisters (65) color their hair and can't understand why I don't do mine. Heck at least mine is stylish. Their hair might be colored but that is all they are doing to try to appear young - whatever that might be.
Let it grow and get it washed and blow dried weekly? I've started doing that and it is so relaxing and nice. Now that I don't mind.
You are right on. I am not young and I am not ashamed of my age. In fact, I am proud that I look as good as I do at my age. I am considering letting it grow out on top, shave the sides like mentioned in the above post, and get it blown out weekly. Great suggestion. Thank you.
