Tell me about it! I am glad when I was raising my daughter I always instilled in her the importance of at least looking presentable in public when going out, as well as good hygiene.

PJs in public people wear them for 2 reasons, they just don't give a dayum or they don't know how to or care enough to look better. It's not even about dressing up. It's about not looking downright slovenly. You don't have to look like you just stepped off of The Sartorialist, but there is a wide gap between that and looking like a slumber party selfie.
I miss What Not To Wear. Like or hate the makeovers they always hammered in that comfortable clothes do not have to be 3 sizes too big and hang from your body, can fit properly and it takes just as much time to put on a pair of pants or a skirt as it does a pair of sweatpants or pajama bottoms unless of course you really do just roll out of bed and go about your day.

I'm not a fan of comparing the U.S. and Europe in terms of politics and lifestyle, but I will say last time I was in Italy I saw a young woman who looked c. 18/19 wearing a pair of plaid pajama bottoms and a sweatshirt. She was American. She looked a hot mess. People actually frown stared. The same girls her age looked downright fierce in comparison wearing simple jeans or casual dresses. It's not body size either. The best dressed person I ever knew wore a 14. Turns out she grew up in Europe. Totally different aesthetic and fashion sense. She knew how to dress to flatter her body and she was gorgeous.
