What's wrong with pleated pants for men? And why do people have such strong opinions about this? Is this another example of "the less important the issue, the more bitter the disagreement"?
I wasn't really aware there was "bitter disagreement".
It depends on your overall look and body type, but pleated pants can create a sort of "ballooning around your waist" effect that isn't very flattering.

I never heard any arguments about it either, nor do I ever see pleated pants on men. Here at least, it seems to be a non-issue, they simply don't exist in any noticeable quantity.

I only ever see pleated pants on older gentlemen. Strong opinions? My husband doesn't wear them and would not. All of his suits, dress pants, shorts, khakis, etc are flat front.
One thing I remember about pleated pants is if the guy has a butt (like myself) the pants do not lay flat in the front, they tend to "balloon" as someone else pointed out. Those guys with a flat butt had a better look in pleated pants. The pleats would lay flat and not get opened up as much in the front.

They are just out of style now.Wait a couple years and they will be hot again.
It's mostly just that they're not at the epitome of fashion right now.
Otherwise, it does depend on things such as whether a man has a paunch and whether the slacks are high-waisted.
Right now, low-waisted (low-rise) slacks are stylish. I don't think there are any pleated slacks made low-waist, so they're automatically out of fashion.
But a man with a belly usually looks worse with low-waisted slacks hanging under his belly than high-waisted slacks pulled over his belly. In that case, high-waisted pleated slacks would look better on his particular body than the more "fashionable" low-waisted flat-front slacks.
i don't like them as I think they make me look fat. However, I have had some. BTW, 34 waist
