This brings to mind a very unpleasant memory of an old boyfriend trying to impress my parents. He sat in front of them in a chair with shorts and no underwear, one s-c-r-o-t-u-m trying to sneak out down the left leg. He would not stop talking until my mother started laughing, and I finally had to wave him out of the room for a frank discussion in the garage.
but seriously, what IS the reason or purpose for underwear? is it some prehistoric/victorian/archaic thing that we really dont need anymore but refuse to give up because society tell us we need it?
I feel that if one were living in a warm climate without air conditioning, ones undergarments also are present to absorb ones perspiration and body sweat. In cold weather, extra layers provides more warmth. And having these extra layers also prevent chafing and bunching up of the garments. And my earlier comments about doing more laundering of the outer garments was more a factor a hundred years ago and before washing machines and professional dry cleaning establishments. Think of having to clean the costumes on a Merchant and Ivory film production on a daily basis.
All you ladies who don't wear underwear must be young, and child-free. Wait 'till you've had one or two kids and hit middle age and menopause...believe me, it's WAY MORE than hot flashes!
