I have been on the hunt for the perfect button down (dress) shirt for an athletic/thin build. To give you my size, i am 5'11", around 170 lbs, athletic/thin build, low body fat. I wear these each day to the office, tucked in with slacks (no tie).
Modern fit/slim shirts look really good on my build. Most of my suits, pants, etc are of the straight/slim variety.
About 6 months ago, i thought i had found the perfect button down shirt - Kohls Apt. 9 slim fit. They fit almost all my criteria:
They are slim fitting
They stretch
They have a modern look
They come in a ton of colors
They are inexpensive! (under $20/shirt)
The problem? They are AWFUL with wrinkles. They are so bad that each morning while driving to work, i have to adjust my seat belt several times so it doesn't wrinkle the shirt before i get there. I only wear a jacket with them if i absolutely have to, otherwise, they wrinkle.
I am now starting to try new dress shirts that are strictly no wrinkle/iron free and are of the slim/modern fitting variety. And i am having a tough time finding something decent.
The latest shirt i bought to try is an Arrow no iron modern fit shirt. I bought it 1 size smaller than i usually wear and it seems to fit similarly to the Apt 9. shirt. Going to try it for 2-3 weeks before i make any conclusions on it.
For those of you who wear this style shirt, what dress shirts and from where do you purchase?
Dude, it's Kohl's. What did you expect, quality? Find a quality of shirt that you like, and have it tailored the way you want it to fit. Problem solved.
Banana Republic non-iron slim fit are pretty good and they don't wrinkle easily. They have a couple different slim fits. One is tailored slim (not really for athletic types, more like just "skinny"). Some of it depends on your shoulders. In my case I have to wear larger shirts to accommodate shoulders, but my waist is very small, so I have a hard time finding shirts that fit properly all around and have to compromise a little bit.
Check out Van Husen slim fit wrinkle free dress shirts. It is what my son wears every day. He just washes them and gets them hung on a hanger right out of the dryer. Don't let them sit there in the dryer or over dry them. If he tried ironing them he would put in more wrinkles.
Mark anthony also has a slim fit that resists wrinkles, too.
Look for wrinkle free written on the shirt or packaging over wrinkle resistant and I think you will like the way they wear better.
My husband likes Geoffrey Beene shirts because they don't wrinkle at all. He's got a couple of Arrow shirts and they're just as good when it comes to wrinkles.
Although you may be right with some of Kohls products, do not discount their mens dress clothing. The Apt. 9 shirts have great reviews, outside of the wrinkle issue.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions! I will check each out and see what fits best
Ct shirts are the only dress shirts I wear and I wear them 5 days a week. They come in non-iron, regular, slim or extra slim. You can find them on sale 30-40ish. I wear the extra slim
Reading this reminds me how glad I am that my uniform is a fun t-shirt, jeans, and combat boots (nothing like owning my own place *grin*).
That said, on the rare occasion that I need to dress up, and noting I have a slim but athletic wide-shoulder long arm build, my dress shirts are all tailored. I am also not afraid of ironing before going out (I'm good/quick at it too). All that said, most of my dress shirts are years old now... I paid more upfront for each shirt and tailoring and it was worth it.

Take your shirts to the dry cleaner and ask for laundry light starch. I never have the problem you do no matter the brand.
Costs a little over a buck each around here because there are a lot of dry cleaning establishments.
